Featured Book: The Way of the Househusband, Volume 1

This is actually a book recommendation for this whole series. About a year ago, I came across this manga while trying to find new series to read. Oh goodness, this is one of the funniest book series I have read in a long time!

Here is the basic plot. A mafia member Tatsu (aka “The Immortal Dragon”), leaves his gang, marries a careerwoman Miku, and becomes a stay-at-home husband. And an amazing one at that! He can cook, deep clean, knit, create pottery, bake and find amazing shopping deals at the market. That’s about it. He comes across multiple people who knew him from his past life but stays true to his new lifestyle.

The beauty of this series is its use of reversals. In a movie analysis of Spiderman Into the Spiderverse (2018) by Filmento on YouTube, he defined reversals as “. . . setting up an assumption and then playing that assumption off as something that is completely opposite.”. In The Way of the Househusband, Tatsu’s appearance and actions always make him seem like he is doing something dangerous or criminal. However, he never is.

For example, in the first chapter, the author introduces readers to the main character Tatsu getting ready for the day. By all appearances, he has the look of someone out to kill.

We get this and then. . . .

. . . . we get that. A classic reversal setup. He may look like a gangster but he is definitely the epitome of the perfect house maker.

There it is. Plain and simple. This is a delightfully funny comedy I would recommend to any looking for a pleasant read and a lot of laughs.

Here are some of my favorite pictures of Tatsu. Such a funny man.

Him at Zumba.
His first run-in with the police.
Attempt at a pleasant smile.
Needed relaxation. . .
Couple Posing.
Gangster Santa
Coffee Art.
How to deal with knife salesmen.
